Parkland was incorporated in 1961 and is located in northwest Broward County. It has a population of more than 24,000 residents. It is bordered by the Sawgrass Expressway to the south, Palm Beach County to the north, State Road 7 to the east and a natural Conservation area to the west. It is predominantly a residential community with zoning laws designed to protect the “parklike” character of the city. It encompasses 13 square miles with multipurpose trails, bicycle paths, recreation fields and numerous parks included in the development plan. In February 2004, the Parkland City Commission approved the merger of the city's law enforcement operations with the Broward Sheriff's Office, effective March 1, 2004.
